Apparently Las Vegas, Nevada authorities encouraged rabbit owners to dump unwanted rabbits in a certain location. Presumably they did so in lieu of responsibly addressing the issue through Las Vegas’ existing animal shelters. Area residents have fed and cared for them for years. Some, like Facebook’s Dave Schweiger, provided for their spay and neuter as notable others do for feral cats.

According to median estimates, there are between 600 and 800 such rabbits. Now the state has without evidence apparently determined they are diseased and has scheduled them for euthanasia. (See Dave Schweiger’s FaceBook post).

Nationwide bunny rescues like Bunny Lu Adoptions in Warrenton, VA (Where we adopted Melville and Bunjamin), and Maryland’s Bright Eryes Sanctuary race against the clock to save the remaining rabbits. Currently a shipment of the first 100 bunnies is making its way East.

Importantly, the rabbits appear to authorities to represent a health hazard most likely because the rabbit’s natural predators have disappeared from the ecosystem of urbanized Nevada. More importantly, we can count our blessings that Nevada authorities do not employ bioterrorism viruses against these rabbits as the Australian government did some decades ago to the wild rabbit population. As a result of that limited release of myxomytosis virus, today European and UK rabbits SHOULD BE vaccinated against the disease, as it spread to the domestic rabbit and then across continents.

Myxomytosis is a form of inhumane population management control which also proved very short-sighted.

A petition against comdemnation and extermination of the Las Vegas dumped rabbits is pending. Please sign the petition when it becomes available on line; please consider supporting your local, participating rabbit rescue organizations financially.
